In his first three years at secondary school, Kevin Kane's mum was spending more than £5 a week from her tight family budget so he could get the bus to school, rather than walk the 15-minute journey and run the risk of assault on the streets of Parkhead, Glasgow. Now the fourth-year pupil cycles to St Mungo's Academy on a bike lent to him by the school as part of a scheme established by Glasgow city council. (12/04) Read
