Penny farthing. Even the name of the bike is out of the ordinary.
Dreamed up by British engineer James Starley in the late 19th century, the "highwheeler" or "ordinary" bike has been seen cycling all over the world for 137 years.
The giant-front-wheeled, very-small-rear-wheeled bicycle was the successor to earlier attempts, though the penny farthing was the first of its kind in efficiency (26/06)
